Introduction

The eye sockets (orbits) are bony cavities that contain and protect the eyes and their supporting structures. Disorders affecting the orbits include fractures (see Injuries to the Eye: Fractures of the Orbit), infections, inflammation, vascular disorders, and tumors. Thyroid disease can also affect the orbit. Many eye socket disorders require treatment by a medical doctor who specializes in eye disorders (ophthalmologist).
