Spinal Tap

  • Tests for Brain, Spinal Cord, and Nerve Disorders
  • To do a spinal tap, the doctor inserts a thin hollow needle in the lower back. The needle passes between the bones of the spine and into the fluid-filled space around the spinal cord. A small amount of the fluid (called cerebrospinal fluid) from this space then slowly drains out and is collected. People usually lie on their side, but if the procedure is difficult in that position, they may be seated.
