		Overview of the Esophagus

As a person eats, food moves into the pharynx (throat) and through the upper esophageal sphincter into the esophagus. Waves of muscular contractions, called peristalsis, propel the food downward through the esophagus. The food then passes through the lower esophageal sphincter and into the stomach.
