Celiac Disease: Quick Facts

Celiac disease is a hereditary intolerance to gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley, and oats). Gluten stimulates the immune system to produce certain antibodies, which damage the lining of the small intestine. As a result, nutrients from food are not absorbed normally.
