Dermatitis is superficial inflammation of the skin characterized by

  • Redness

  • Edema

  • Oozing

  • Crusting

  • Scaling

  • Vesicles (sometimes)

Pruritus is common. Eczema is a nonspecific term synonymous with dermatitis, but it is often used to refer to atopic dermatitis, the most common type of dermatitis.
