Introduction to Acute Abdomen and Surgical Gastroenterology

By Parswa Ansari, MD

Acute abdomen refers to abdominal symptoms and signs of such severity or concern that disorders requiring surgery should be considered. The primary symptom is acute abdominal pain (see page Acute Abdominal Pain). Disorders that cause acute abdominal pain include acute mesenteric ischemia (see page Acute Mesenteric Ischemia), acute perforation (see page Acute Perforation), appendicitis (see page Appendicitis), hernias of the abdominal wall (see page Hernias of the Abdominal Wall), ileus (see page Ileus), intestinal obstruction (see page Intestinal Obstruction), and intra-abdominal abscesses (see Intra-Abdominal Abscesses). Chronic abdominal pain is discussed in Chronic and Recurrent Abdominal Pain.
