Introduction to Acute Abdomen and Surgical Gastroenterology
Acute abdomen refers to abdominal symptoms and signs of such severity or concern that disorders requiring surgery should be considered. The primary symptom is acute abdominal pain (see Acute Abdominal Pain). Disorders that cause acute abdominal pain include acute mesenteric ischemia (see Acute Mesenteric Ischemia), acute perforation (see Acute Perforation), appendicitis (see Appendicitis), hernias of the abdominal wall (see Hernias of the Abdominal Wall), ileus (see Ileus), intestinal obstruction (see Intestinal Obstruction), and intra-abdominal abscesses (see Intra-Abdominal Abscesses). Chronic abdominal pain is discussed in Chronic and Recurrent Abdominal Pain.
