This image demonstrates, clockwise from the lower left, the larval, nymphal, adult male, and unengorged adult female stages of the Ixodes scapularis tick. Most cases of Lyme disease are transmitted by nymph bites. A nymph is about the size of a poppy seed. Nymph bites occur most commonly between May and July.
