  • Mucormycosis is an infection of immunosuppressed patients, including those with diabetes. In rhinocerebral mucormycosis, Rhizopus, Rhizomucor, or another fungal species enters the vascular space and causes tissue necrosis of the nasal septum, palate, orbit, and sinuses. The infection can extend into the brain, causing cavernous sinus thrombosis, seizures, and thrombotic stroke.
