Benign hypertensive arteriolar nephrosclerosis is characterized histologically by arteriolar hyalinosis caused by insudation of plasma proteins and medial thickening caused by both hypertrophy and hyperplasia of vascular smooth muscle cells (periodic acid-Schiff stain, ×200).
