Hordeolum

Topics Containing This Multimedia

  • Chalazion and Hordeolum (Stye)
  • Most hordeola (styes) are external, as pictured, and caused by infection and obstruction of an eyelash follicle and adjacent glands of Zeis or Moll's glands. An internal hordeolum is rare and caused by meibomian gland infection. An external hordeolum is clinically indistinguishable from an early, acute chalazion.
