Proliferation of blood vessels under the macula are characteristic of wet (also called exudative or neovascular) age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Changes in the appearance of the center of the macula as well as macular elevation seen in this image are caused by hemorrhage, fluid accumulation, or both. In this image, the fovea (the more uniformly red area in the center) is so red because a small amount of blood is under the retina. The yellow spots are drusen, characteristic of the preexisting dry AMD.
