Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic, scarring inflammation of apocrine glands in the axillae or groin or around the nipples or anus. The acute lesion resembles an abscess with swollen, tender masses. Chronic cases are characterized by sinus tract formation. In chronic axillary cases, inflamed nodules coalesce to form palpable, cordlike, fibrotic bands.
