A 41-day-old conceptus removed from its site of implantation. Note the well-developed endometrial cups (raised pale areas) on the endometrium. The areas of the chorion that opposed the cups are grossly indistinguishable from the rest of the chorion. If a mare aborts when the endometrial cups are still functional, the mare will not cycle during that time.
