Osteoporosis

In osteoporosis, normal bone (left circle) becomes less dense (right circle), which makes fractures likely. When the bones of the spine (vertebrae) become less dense, they may gradually collapse into themselves. This type of fracture is called a compression fracture. If several vertebrae break, an abnormal curvature of the spine called a dowager hump (right) may develop.
