Inferior Vena Cava Filter

To prevent a blood clot from traveling to the heart, doctors may place a filter (formerly called an umbrella) in the inferior vena cava to trap blood clots. The inferior vena cava is a large vein that returns blood to the heart from the lower part of the body.
