Metabolic bone disorders are a group of conditions characterized by impaired bone mineralization. Metabolic bone disease results from abnormalities in the balance or metabolism of calcium, phosphate, vitamin D, or parathyroid hormone. In children, disrupted mineral metabolism can lead to changes in serum calcium and/or phosphorous, bone pain, fractures, poor growth, and rickets.
