Lefamulin is an antibiotic that works by interfering with the bacteria's production of the proteins it needs to grow and multiply.
Lefamulin is used to treat community-acquired pneumonia that is caused by many bacteria, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Use of Lefamulin During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
When lefamulin was given to pregnant animals, some harmful effects on the fetus were observed, and no well-designed studies have been done in pregnant women. Pregnant women should be given an alternative drug until better safety data are available. Females of reproductive age should use contraception while taking lefamulin and for 2 days after the last dose. (See also Drug Use During Pregnancy.)
Women who are breastfeeding should pump and discard breast milk while taking lefamulin and for 2 days after the last dose. (See also Drug Use During Breastfeeding.)
