Although there is some degree of overlap, medical disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract are typically managed by nephrologists, who are internal medicine subspecialists. Genitourinary disorders requiring operative management are handled by urologists, who are surgical subspecialists. Urologists also are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders that involve the male reproductive system, including erectile dysfunction.
